So here you go - a delicious and nutritious quick Jamaican Irish Moss inspired drink.
You may wonder why the drink is called Irish moss? It got its name due to Irish immigrants bringing the sea weed - Chondrus Crispus to Jamaica. Nowadays the sea weed that you find in the Caribbean isn't Chondrus Crispus, its a warm water version of seaweed typically Eucheuma Cottonii or Gracilaria commonly known as 'Sea moss'.
As folklore would have it, sea moss became a key ingredient in a famous elixir, known to boost vitality among both men and women. The locals had traditionally perfected the art of preparing this elixir, washing the moss, boiling it with milk, and infusing it with the delightful flavors of vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg. However, the secret sauce lies in the moss itself – which gives the Jamaican Irish moss drink its signature viscosity, a unique blend of thickness and slight stickiness.
Nowadays, most people have access to blenders and have learnt that boiling the seaweed can take alot of the nutrients out of it, so instead of boiling it is soaked and blended to retain even more of the nutrients that come from it being a prebiotic and probiotic, rich in fiber, magnesium, potassium, zinc, calcium and phosphorus.
It's important to note that there's limited scientific evidence supporting a direct link between Irish moss and enhanced virality, however, sea moss offers a plethora of other proven benefits that include helping to improve gut health.
Regardless of whether you are drinking it to be healthier or just for fun, we can all agree it's a delicious addition to your diet.
